balthazar is quite a hot spot in soho... and it's easy to see why. the food is quite good, much better than average. the crowd is always interesting, mainly trendy people, and there is always a line. the decor is very charming and nostalgic of the old world. however, it is a bit on the pricey side; but when you consider the quality of the food and the overall experience, it's a steal at the price they charge. the steak frites is a popular item, and the fries are crispy and very tasty. and they also have the best bread that i have ever had in a restaurant (if you just want the bread, go to the boulangerie adjacent to the restaurant for a good selection of baked goods). i do enjoy it whenever i go to balthazar, but i cannot say that it is one of my favorites in the city. it is usually very crowded, despite of what time you show up, and the long wait is not much fun. and the tables are very close together, not much elbow space. it's also quite noisy inside. for anyone considering a visit to balthazar, i say, go once just for the experience, but don't expect it to become your new favorite eatery.
